Transforming waste collection with real-time visibility provided by RFID technology

IFAST, a global leader in driving data transformation through innovation to transform industries and lives, announced that the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca has deployed IFAST's Micro X II RFID tags to successfully manage thousands of garbage collection bins. By using IFAST’s E-vision’s rugged tagging and software solutions, the city now has real-time visibility into its waste collection activities and fleet.

Mecca is looking for a way to track the condition of trash cans and the location of garbage collection trucks.

To better serve customers, the city wants to be able to confirm that each bin has been emptied into a collection truck, enable automated electronic communication from the truck to the operations office, and minimize human intervention during data collection activities .

Makkah selected Riyadh-based E-vision’s RFID-based waste management solution. The company provides innovative waste collection solutions, as well as rugged tags from IFAST’s custom GPS tracking devices and RFID Readers from ThingMagic.

Mecca utilizes several modules of E-vision’s Waste Collection software, including complaint management, fleet management, tracking and other customized services. E-vision also created a communications board to manage hardware tracking capabilities.

Tarek Fawaz, technical manager at E-vision, said: “Garbage collection is a challenging application for data collection. IFAST has provided us with RFID tags that are uniquely suited to the Saudi Arabian environment and are robust enough to withstand the abuse bins are subjected to. shock and vibration."

Mecca is able to track which containers have been emptied and when, as well as track and manage the fleet in real time. Using the complaint management module, customers and supervisors can log any issues or violations via the mobile app and submit the issue to the company, with resolution tracked and confirmed. Managers can also monitor performance and generate various reports based on RFID data.

With the system running successfully for nearly three years, Mecca and E-vision are developing a new device with a built-in RFID reader to improve data collection, as well as enhance the software user interface and redesign the software architecture for the transition to the cloud.
