Future trends and the sustainable source-tagging model

Gen2v3 should be monitored as a protocol evolution, not treated as a present universal mandate. Public materials have discussed Gen2v3 enhancements for tag population management, reading performance and dense multi-reader environments. However, this research did not locate a publicly accessible final published version with a stable URL that could be used to assert current mandatory support. Supplier decisions should therefore be based on a retailer’s current specification and product availability, with a roadmap review rather than an assumption that older Gen2 tags will immediately become unacceptable.

Source tagging is becoming the control architecture, not merely a label location. The ISO/IEC 17360:2023 scope supports a common framework for product, package, transport-unit and returnable-packaging identities and performance. [9] When serialization begins at the factory, the supplier can verify encoding, application and aggregation before the goods reach a DC. That reduces downstream firefighting and allows serialized events to carry meaningful business context from commissioning onward.

Automation is most valuable when it is a quality gate, not just a faster reader. Tunnels and portals can read moving units and cases, but the surrounding system must know what should be present, associate it with the right SSCC and alert on anomalies. AI and ML are promising for clustering rework patterns, detecting reader drift, prioritizing exceptions and predicting test failures. The technology should support human escalation rather than overwrite an identity without audit. A model that learns from a narrow site can also overfit; datasets need label metadata, product media, reader configuration and known root causes.

Sustainability will increasingly separate merchandise identity from transport-Asset identity. Reusable totes, pallets and returnable packaging items can carry their own asset identifiers, while merchandise uses SGTIN or another appropriate identity. ISO/IEC 17360:2023 explicitly considers reusability and recyclability. [9] This architecture can reduce single-use labels on transit assets and improve asset accountability, but it requires hygiene: a tote ID must never be confused with a serialized item, and returnable-asset movement should not be counted as merchandise movement.

The direction of the market is toward serialized, event-aware and increasingly automated vendor compliance. That trend will reward suppliers who treat RFID as a governed data and process discipline. It will penalize those who treat it as a line-item purchase. The correct response is not to buy the strongest tag; it is to define the required identity at every packaging level, test it in its real environment, control its serialization and prove the shipment at the dock.
