A brief analysis of the application of RFID technology in recycling packaging management

In December 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Commerce and other departments jointly issued the "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Transformation and Development of my country's Packaging Industry", which clearly stated that the packaging field should carry out technical research on green, safe and intelligent aspects, promote simplified, reduced and reused packaging design technology, and guide express packaging to develop in the direction of standardization, informatization, green and recycling sharing, so as to build a reverse logistics system for packaging waste.


However, the management of recycled packaging also faces many challenges:


1. Many companies involved


Recycling packaging usually involves multiple companies, including manufacturers, logistics companies, sellers, etc., and the information flow and collaborative management between each link are relatively complex.


2. Many management links

Recycling packaging needs to go through multiple links such as delivery, receipt, circulation, warehousing, and scrapping, and each link needs to be managed and monitored.


3. High loss rate

Due to poor management or human factors, the loss rate of recycled packaging is generally high, affecting its economic benefits and environmental protection effects.


Company A is a wholly-owned logistics subsidiary of a state-owned group manufacturing enterprise. The recycling packaging service it provides mainly uses reusable iron packaging containers to replace disposable wooden packaging boxes used in the material supply process. Through the recycling and turnover of iron packaging, it reduces packaging costs, improves turnover efficiency, and realizes green carbon reduction in the supply chain. Company A has invested nearly 80,000 sets of recycling packaging, distributed in 10 cities including Nanjing, Qingdao, Tangshan, and Changchun.


With the continuous development of the network information age, the scale of the Logistics industry has continued to expand, resulting in an increase in packaging and warehousing business volume, and the frequency of goods entering and leaving the warehouse has also increased. RFID technology, which has many advantages, has been widely used in warehousing management.


On the one hand, RFID recycling packaging management can improve the utilization rate of recycled shared packaging.


By applying RFID technology, automatic reading and identification of recycling packaging information can be realized. Through RFID recycling packaging management, data is read for warehousing, transportation and other links involving packaging circulation, and the status and location information of each package is accurately obtained, and packaging recycling data is recorded. Then, by using big data analysis technology to analyze and process the circulation data of recycled packaging, effective measures can be formulated to improve the turnover rate of recycled packaging, increase the number of uses, thereby reducing the cost of packaging use and increasing revenue.


On the other hand, the application of RFID can improve the management level of recycled shared packaging and reduce errors.


The advantage of recycled packaging is that it can be reused many times, which has the characteristics of reducing packaging costs, saving packaging materials, promoting packaging standardization and improving supply chain sustainability; the disadvantage is that recycled packaging needs to go through many links and enterprises, and the circulation process is difficult to control. Most of the recycled packaging has the problem of low packaging return rate.


According to statistics, the loss rate of recycled logistics packaging is about 10% to 15%. The application of RFID technology can run through the entire process from packaging delivery and receipt, packaging circulation, packaging warehousing to packaging scrapping. Building a recycling packaging management system based on RFID technology will greatly reduce the error of manual data collection, save operating costs, reduce the loss rate, make information more real-time, and reduce errors.


Through the research of RFID recycling packaging management system, the utilization rate of recycling packaging has been improved, laying the foundation for the continuous replacement and cancellation of the use of disposable wooden packaging boxes, promoting the continuous carbon reduction of recycling packaging, with a cumulative annual carbon reduction of 167,700 tons, releasing 172,000 tons of oxygen, and protecting the natural environment.


The application of recycling packaging management combined with RFID technology can solve the operational bottlenecks brought by the scanning of recycling packaging out of the warehouse and scanning of recycling packaging in the warehouse to the warehouse management, and accelerate the operation process. Through RFID reading and writing operations, the one-time reading of the recycling packaging of the whole vehicle replaces the scanning operation mode of each piece, thereby greatly improving the efficiency of industrial logistics operations. At the same time, reducing the number of handling times can reduce the damage to the recycling packaging during the operation process.
